The LSU Agricultural Center houses the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service. Within the research and public service programs, there is one goal that relates to children and families: Foster consumer well-being through better nutrition, health, product safety, and family resource management for rural and urban citizens. It is assumed that 10 percent of the research funds are targeted toward family and children issues, and that 30 percent of the public service funds are targeted toward families and children.

A supplementary recommendation of $6.5 million, of which $6.5 million is general fund, is included in the Total Recommended amount for this program. It represents funding for agricultural cooperative extension services and agricultural experiment stations and is dependent on renewal of the current sales tax rate of 3% on the sales tax suspension of exemptions base.
