19D DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION - TOTAL

The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education of the State of Louisiana is responsible for the supervision of educational services to all children in the State. Louisiana's commitment to education is substantial; support for public schools is by far the largest single item in the state's budget. Indeed, Louisiana's continued economic, social and cultural growth is directly attributable to the quality of the State's education system.

Services supported by the Education Department and provided by local school districts range from traditional school instruction to special educational services for the physically and mentally handicapped, vocational education, and support services for children and families. In addition to professional teachers, schools are staffed with librarians, social workers, psychologists, guidance counselors, health educators and school nurses. Local school district staff work cooperatively with community social, health agencies, the courts and families in identifying and working to correct problems. Adult education and post secondary vocational education have not been included because these department functions are not targeted for children.
