All DOA LAN users must be provided a LAN ID and a LAN password in order to use the local area network. In order to acquire a LAN ID, your section's Management Consultant must submit a request to PC/LAN Services. PC/LAN Services will assign your network ID and perform the necessary administrative functions for you to be granted network access.
Your LAN ID is associated with a specific PC. On that PC, you are granted access to the local desktop and the network. Once you are logged on and your screen saver kicks in, your PC can only be accessed locally by typing in your password. If your PC is logged off, it can only be logged on by you, someone in your work group, or by a PC/LAN administrator. As an additional security feature, the name of the last person who logged on to your PC is automatically displayed at each log on.
It is good practice to LOG OFF your PC when you leave work each day.
Occasionally, PC/LAN may request the right to perform an administrative function on your PC by using tools which allow remote access to your hard drive over the network. They may request this if you call in a problem which can be corrected most expediently that way, without the need to send a technician to your office. Under NO circumstances will an administrator look at or change information on your PC without first explaining what is about to occur and obtaining your permission to do so.
In the event that PC/LAN obtains access to your LAN password during administrative functions, you should reset your password once the work is complete. In some cases, your password will automatically be set to expire and you will be required to reset it the next time you log on.
Audit logs are available on workstations, but are not typically implemented due to the additional disk space and impact on the processor which are required to support it. If you wish to implement audit logs on your PC, please call the Help Desk for instructions.
LAN passwords are set to expire every 30 days. As the password expiration date nears, you will be warned of the expiration. When it expires, you will be prompted and will be required to change it. Note that you can change your password at any time by pressing CTRL ALT DEL, and selecting CHANGE PASSWORD.
If you are concerned about unauthorized access to highly confidential data on your PC, you should discuss these concerns with your OIS Management Consultant to determine the best approach to support your needs. In some cases, increased physical security is the best answer. For example, you may wish to consider locking your office or storing data on diskette or zip drive, which can be locked in a cabinet.
