LAN Password

Importance

To ensure network security, the DOA has implemented LAN passwords for each LAN user. Your username and password grants you access not only to your own hard drive, but DOA file servers, the Internet, your e-mail, and other computer accounts.

Passwords should be kept in a safe place and not shared. You wouldn't want someone to use your passport illegally, nor would you want someone to steal your password and use your account. An intruder can gain access to your system, damage your files, and launch attacks on other computer systems throughout the network. To ensure network security, it is up to every user to keep their passwords private.

LAN Password Rules:

  • A LAN password is required for every DOA LAN ID.
  • Your password will automatically expire after 30 days, at which time, you will be prompted to enter a new password.
  • The text you use for your password cannot be re-used until your password has been changed three times. On the fourth change, you can re-use the first word.
  • Passwords are case sensitive. Therefore, the password, "2cute4u" is NOT the same as "2CUTE4U", since one uses lower case letters and one uses upper case. Make sure that when you type your password the Caps Lock key is not on unless you intend to use capital letters.
  • Your LAN password can be changed at any time by pressing CTRL ALT DEL, then selecting CHANGE PASSWORD. Note that your LAN password and your mainframe password are managed separately. Changing one will not automatically change the other.
  • Once you change your password, you cannot change it again for at least one day.
  • You can synchronize your LAN password with your mainframe password so that you only need to remember one password. Since mainframe password rules are a little more restrictive than LAN password rules, PC/LAN suggests that you first change your mainframe password (when it expires), then change your LAN password, using the same word. If you would like to force a change to your mainframe password BEFORE it expires, please call the OCS Help Desk at 342-4730 for assistance.
  • After three (3) unsuccessful logon attempts, your ID will be suspended and must be unsuspended by calling the OCS Help Desk (342-4730). OCS technicians cannot at any time do a "look up" on your password. If you forget your password, they can assign a new one for you, which you should change the next time you log on.

Password Guidelines:

The proper use of a secured, confidential password is the easiest and most effective security tool available. Passwords should not be divulged to other persons and must be changed on a regular basis. The Office of Information Technology (OIT) has promulgated state standards for passwords in IT STD-009. The Office of Computing Services (OCS) shall establish standards and controls for passwords within the DOA that shall adhere to those guidelines and industry best practices. These guidelines shall include limits on the number of unsuccessful login attempts, validity periods for passwords and composition.  OCS shall periodically audit password use within the DOA for compliance to established standards.
