Commissioner Rainwater appoints Charles Calvi to be CEO of Office of Group Benefits

BATON ROUGE – Commissioner of Administration Paul Rainwater announced today that he has appointed Charles Calvi, Jr., to serve as Chief Executive Officer of state government’s Office of Group Benefits (OGB).  Calvi will begin his service at OGB on January 9th.

OGB is responsible for providing health and accidental benefits and life insurance to active and retired state employees and their dependents.

“Charlie brings to the job a wealth of experience that I know will help us continue providing excellent care and service to OGB plan members,” Rainwater said.

Biography of Charles Calvi, Jr.

Charles Calvi, Jr., of Baton Rouge, has over 40 years of experience in the fields of healthcare, insurance, and employee benefits, and is a member of the Society of Professional Benefit Administrators.  Calvi comes to OGB from Advanced Benefit Concepts, Inc., where he has served since 2008 as President of the consultant firm for health care, insurance, and third-party administration (TPA) industries.

From 1996 to 2008 Calvi was Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BestCare, Inc., where he developed and owned the first Physician Hospital Network in the state of Louisiana.  Prior to that he was CEO of Women’s Physician Health Organization, where he developed strategic initiatives and the business plan for the specialty physician hospital organization (PHO).

From 1987 to 1994 Calvi served in several executive positions at Gulf South Health Plan, where he developed business, geographic, and product expansion strategies, and directed overall marketing and sales strategies.  Prior to that he was Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Health Care Administrators of Indianapolis, IN, where he helped to establish and structure a TPA for a Midwestern life insurance company.

From 1980 to 1985 Calvi was group manager for Jones, Hill and Mercer Insurance in Savannah, GA, where he directed the employee benefits department covering 87,000 members.  Prior to that, starting in 1969, Calvi began his career at New York Life Insurance in Savannah, where he served as sales and office manager.

Calvi has an undergraduate degree in journalism and psychology from Memphis State University, and did graduate work in marketing at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.
