Required Courses for Jobs in Supervisory Group 2

The following classes are required for employees whose jobs fall into Supervisory Group 2. To register for classes, complete a CPTP class registration form and send it to your agency CPTP coordinator. Participants will receive written confirmation of registration about two to three weeks before the class begins. All classes will meet from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., unless specifically stated otherwise. For further information, call your agency CPTP coordinator or the CPTP office at (225) 342-8539.

Effective July 1, 2008, the following courses are required for employees whose jobs fall into Supervisory Group 2, as defined by the Department of Civil Service:

  • Four of the following seven CPTP classes:

BUILDING BETTER PERFORMANCE THROUGH EMPLOYEE SKILL DEVELOPMENT
Class Duration: 1 Day

This 1-day class highlights the fact that managers and supervisors need to ensure that employees have both the necessary job skills and opportunities for learning transfer. The primary purpose of this class is to share strategies and techniques that can be used before, during, and after training to ensure support for the transfer of knowledge and skills to improved performance on the job. Also included is a brief introduction to the many performance factors that can play important roles in the employee training process. Class participants are encouraged to examine their work environments carefully in order to fully understand all the factors that may be affecting worker performance.

CONDUCTING AN EFFECTIVE JOB INTERVIEW
Class Duration: 1 Day      
Class Registration Form

This 1-day class will provide a basic introduction to effective interviewing skills. Participants will learn how to forecast necessary staffing levels based on required skills and changes in technology, perform a job skill analysis, prepare behavior-based interview questions, apply the basic requirements of employment laws to work situations, follow legally required interviewing guidelines, and develop a system to evaluate and select job candidates.

EFFECTIVE PROBLEM SOLVING AND DECISION MAKING
Class Duration: 2 Days      
Class Registration Form

This 2-day class teaches participants effective problem and decision making skills. The instructor will guide participants through the process of identifying root causes of problems, generating solutions to problems, establishing decision-making criteria, and using those criteria to select the best alternative solution to problems. Participants will learn to evaluate the benefits and risks of individual versus group decision-making approaches. Case situations will be used to help participants learn how to apply the problem solving and decision making processes to their own work situations.

IMPROVING EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE THROUGH COACHING

This 1-day class presents the coaching process and strategies for improving employee performance. Participants will learn about performance counseling, specific coaching strategies, and motivation techniques. Coaching is presented as an effective tool for improving employee performance while also building employee commitment. Class exercises will enable participants to return to the job ready to implement effective coaching.

INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES AND DIVERSITY IN THE WORKPLACE
Class Duration: 1 Day

This 1-day class will examine the ways we handle differences among people in the workplace. Participants will learn how and why we have different perceptions about people and how those perceptions can affect teamwork and productivity in positive and negative ways. Participants will practice dealing with different dimensions of diversity in structured exercises and learn how to create a climate in which all employees' contributions are recognized and appreciated.

MANAGER'S ROLE IN WORKFORCE AND SUCCESSION PLANNING
Class Duration: 1 Day      
Class Registration Form

Targeted to middle and upper level managers, this 1-day class describes the role managers should play in the succession planning process. When your workforce retires, who will be ready to replace these experienced employees? What strategies have you implemented to ensure that your agency will be properly staffed with qualified supervisors, managers, and leaders? Succession planning enables your organization to help provide training and development opportunities to your agency's future leaders. Succession planning helps you "build bench strength."

MANAGING AND IMPROVING WORK PROCESSES
Class Duration: 2 Days      
Class Registration Form

This 2-day class examines how work processes impact work effectiveness. Participants will learn how to analyze current work processes, develop a process performance tracking system, break down processes into tasks, and apply a process improvement strategy. Skills learned in this class will be applicable to the management of any work process.
