What is SGMS?
The SGMS is a new section within the Office of Community Development. The primary objective of the State Grants Management Section (SGMS), as outlined in Governor Blanco's Grant Application Policy Executive Order KBB 2005-7, is to effectively maximize the use of federal and private funds. State agencies, local governments and nonprofits can take full advantage of the services SGMS provides.
What are SGMS' Goals?
INCREASE AWARENESS
- Research numerous federal and private funding databases.
- Notify agencies and local governments of possible opportunities that fit their needs.
REDUCE DUPLICATION OF EFFORTS
- Increase efficiency and effectiveness of the State's efforts to locate, apply for and receive grant funding.
- Reduce unnecessary competition within and among separate state agencies.
BUILD CAPACITY
- Provide prospect research and grant writing training seminars to local governments, state agencies and nonprofits.
- Encourage collaborative efforts within and among state agencies
- Assist state agencies with collaborative grant applications.

Services SGMS Provides
FUNDING RESEARCH: Funding research is the art of locating grant funding opportunities. We at the SGMS have access to the Foundation Center's Database , federal funding notices and other resources that aid in locating federal and private funding opportunities. We can assist in your grant funding search.
GRANT WRITING: If you have identified the grant for which you intend to apply, SGMS can provide support to you and your organization in putting together the grant application. We can provide some ideas on program development, program evaluation, and the budget, if you need some pointers. We may have the staff time to review your proposal during the writing process and recommend changes to keep your application more in line with the application guidelines. We can answer technical questions about the standard forms and requirements. With our expertise and knowledge of the grant process, we can help ensure you submit a sound proposal.
